and acting tough when he was just away for week in hawaii. everyone deserves a nice christmas holiday but not when we have serious issues that need to be addressed. i don't think the president has led on this. the american people are also partly to blame here. there was an election and he left in place everything the same. the house is the same. senate is basically the same. you voted for basically more of the same. american people don't escape blame either. >> gregg: van hollen basically has the same argument, he has been out for 12 days and vanhollen, boehner would not touk talk to him. i'm not sure i buy that. if it does go to the fiscal cliff and we go over it, sequestration would cut only $109 billion next year. that is actually not a lot in a budget of almost four trillion, is it? >> it's not a lot of the total number, half of that goes to defense which are own admirals and generals have said and secretary of defense would be devastating. this comes on top of -- $50 billion in one year to the defense. and it doesn't touch at all medicare and the other entitlement programs. >> gr

to hawaii. where he said look, we have to scale back expectations. basically just extend middle class tax cuts. don't worry about the rates for everyone else. secondly extend unememployment insurance for about two million people who will be losing it a few days from now at the end of the year. finally he refer to possibility of smaller bit ever spending cuts. not major entitlement rerecall to. not major cuts to medicare like had been on the table in so-called plan a, the $4 trillion debt deal he and john boehner had been talking about for weeks. so we might see a small bit of spending cuts just to stave off the sequester, the massive amount of spending cuts that will kick in at the beginning of the year to harm the pentagon and other agencies. if they are getting anything, there are low expectations but if they get anything it will be a very small deal, something much smaller than they have been talking about for weeks, jon. jon: there aren't too many people these meetings. so a little hard to get an assessment, what is your idea, what is your best, yeah, assessment i guess how things are

the way back from hawaii and cut his vacation short if he's eager to go over the cliff in is that part of his charade. >> if he wants to actually blame other people for his lack of leadership he has to appear, at least, to be coming back to find a solution. if the president was really interested in the level of the debt we have in this country, the $16 trillion, we would have had a budget passed in the senate sometime in the last three years. he proposed a budget and none of the democrats even voted for it. it got 0 votes. i don't think the president is focused where we ought to be focused which is the spending. we have a spending problem. he's fixated on tax rates that only give you about seven days of what the government spends. >> he didn't get any votes on his budget or not very many, but i will give him credit for at least submitting one. it's more than senator harry reid has done on behalf of the senate democrats. the senate democrats haven't proposed a budget. and unless everyone puts a budget on the table there can't be a discussion. senator harry reid has a pocket veto on the
